Supporting the Extreme Poor through Community Philanthropy in Afghanistan

This case study shares the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Afghanistan’s experience with leveraging and strengthening local government structures to launch grassroots philanthropy campaigns to support the extreme poor. Through a combination of capacity strengthening initiatives, AKF Afghanistan enabled local governance structures to adopt pro-poor approaches by identifying extreme poor households and spearheading community philanthropy campaigns. The campaigns focused on food distribution and house repairs in five provinces of Afghanistan. In 2015 alone, the combination of both campaigns successfully mobilised $281,072 USD in cash and in-kind support for 5,387 extreme poor households. Moving forward, the Aga Khan Foundation intends to replicate this model of community philanthropy to support children from extreme poor households by mobilizing community support to provide children with the necessary materials to attend school (e.g. books, stationary and school uniforms).
