The impact of COVID-19 on African civil society organizations: Ongoing uncertainty and a glimmer of optimism

This is the second report on the impact of COVID-19 on African CSOs, compiled by EPIC-Africa and @AfricanNGOs. The previous report, released in June 2020, was the first to focus exclusively on this issue. It filled a critical data gap by offering a snapshot of the impact of COVID-19 on African CSOs in the early days of the pandemic, as well as the many ways these organizations were responding to the crisis while safeguarding their organizations.

This report is based on a survey of 1,039 CSOs in 46 African countries, conducted in June and July of 2021. It draws attention to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on African CSOs while highlighting the essential work they continue to perform. It calls on governments, funders and other stakeholders to recognize, partner with and support African CSOs, whose actions, along with public and private sector solutions, are critical to driving a comprehensive response to COVID-19 and to ensuring a post-pandemic future with a resilient and sustainable civil society sector.
