Of Narratives, Networks and New Spaces: A Baseline Mapping of the African Philanthropy Infrastructure Sector
Halima Mahomed, Rockefeller Foundation, March 2014
The report provides an overview of the current state of infrastructure for philanthropy in Africa. It suggests that although the sector is still small, is growing and already offers a range of different supports. Although the majority of philanthropic infrastructure is still found in South Africa (where philanthropy is more established than elsewhere in Africa), the a growing number of pan-African institutions suggests both an interest in broadening Africa’s philanthropic base as well as an increase in demand for such services.
The research also shows that, while the sector is maturing in terms of capacity, depth and vision, its knowledge and its human and financial capacities are still slender and require considerable long-term investment.
