We’re hiring! Global Network Weaver

The GFCF, a small organization with a big vision, is recruiting. We are looking for someone with energy and enthusiasm, who shares our values and ambitions. The ideal candidate will be someone who is interested in processes and ways of working that facilitate others, and who is excited at the prospect of being part of a small, virtual, global team operating within the context of bigger and diverse global networks.

Overview: Global Network Weaver 

As a member of the team, you will contribute to the overall ambitions of the GFCF – and the #ShiftThePower movement more broadly – by working with, and helping to strengthen, connections within our global network of community philanthropy and civil society partners. Part of your role will be to facilitate flows of funding, information and exchange in ways that deepen practice, build solidarity, amplify successes and strengthen the evidence base for the community philanthropy field. You will also help shape broader advocacy, influencing and engagement efforts involving other parts of the mainstream development sector.

Specific responsibilities may include, but will certainly not be limited to:

• Grantmaking – from reviewing of proposals, to working closely with partners, to managing reporting requirements.
• Data analysis and working with our global network of partners around specific learning initiatives.
• Communicating learnings and advocating on behalf of the field (through thought pieces, research, blogs, etc.).
• Collaborating with partners and allies from the global #ShiftThePower network on specific initiatives and opportunities.

Our team is deliberately small, which means that we often find ourselves wearing more than one hat, and that the lines between specific job responsibilities can sometimes get blurred. You will need to be comfortable with that!

Desired experience and characteristics

• A dynamic, communicative, and highly efficient individual who is able to work with diverse groups of people and across different geographic and institutional cultures.
• Three or more years of previous work experience preferably, but not necessarily, in community development, community philanthropy, philanthropy, or international development, and a strong interest in and commitment to “doing development differently” and shifting power.
• A motivated self-starter who is able to work and thrive as part of a dispersed team, and who is able to meet deadlines comfortably with little supervision.
• Bachelor’s degree (minimum).
• An “all-rounder” who feels they can contribute to different aspects of the organization and who is ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English (the working language of the GFCF), with fluency/proficiency in additional languages desirable.

Further details

• Salary range £35,000 – £50,000 / annum.
• Fixed term one year, with possibility of extension.
• Some international travel will be required. Prior to COVID-19 we had anticipated moving more of our work online in an effort to reduce the GFCF’s carbon footprint. While the pandemic has currently moved all of our work online, it is still expected that some international travel will be required with this position.
• The position is fully remote and can be based anywhere – applicants based in the Global South are especially encouraged to apply. Current GFCF staff all work in the UTC time zone, or within two hours difference of this. Ideally, the selected candidate will be able to organize their work day so that a good proportion of their working hours overlap with other staff.
• Start date: as soon as possible.

The GFCF works to strengthen, harness and demonstrate the value of community philanthropy as an essential element of people-led development and as a strategy for shifting power. For the past 14 years, through a combination of grantmaking to organizations around the world, network strengthening and evidence building, the GFCF has sought to support, accompany and amplify the emerging global community philanthropy field, both as theory and practice.

Community philanthropy is an emerging and evolving practice and body of work. We define it as both a form of, and a force for, equitable, locally-driven development that strengthens community capacity and voice in claiming, operationalizing and expanding rights, builds understanding and trust, nurtures solidarity and most importantly, taps into and builds on local resources, which are pooled together to build and sustain a strong community.
